Joys and Challenges of a Family Business

Many industries in the U.S. are full of family businesses, and the insurance agency arena is no exception. With that come the joys and challenges of families working together. I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing that both as “the new kid” working with my father, and now as “the old guy” with two of my sons in the office.

As a quick aside, as I focus on the family nature of our business, I don’t want to discount or exclude the importance of the rest of our staff. We have been blessed with some outstanding employees who don’t share our last name but have been key to our success. For that, I am also forever thankful.

Career Crossroads

About twenty years ago I was presented with a career crossroads decision. I was with a fine company, working with people I respected and liked and had a fair understanding where my career was going. But this comfortable existence was interrupted by the opportunity to lead the entrance of a company into the state where I had lived and worked for the past twelve years. I was to be given a huge amount of latitude to do this the way I saw fit and it involved leading many disciplines in our business that I had not directly been involved with to that point and perhaps never would be with my current employer.

This is “peak season” for individuals who dedicate a large portion of their time to employee development.
