New Job? First Things First: Be Positive

Starting a new job can be nerve-wracking for anyone, whether it’s your first job or your twentieth job. You will be stepping outside of your comfort zone and entering a new world, and that can be really intimidating.

The first thing you can do to help ease the process of entering a new position is to be positive. You’re opening a new, exciting chapter to your life, full of opportunities and new beginnings. Express your excitement for being given this opportunity to begin this new position and let your coworkers know that you are a joy to be around.

  • Try to put a big ol’ smile on your face, even though it may be difficult with all those butterflies flapping away in your stomach. You’ll be shocked how much more comfortable the situation is if you show a positive attitude, because everyone will feel more relaxed as well.
  • As a follow up to smiling, look like you’re having fun. Change doesn’t need to be a stressful thing – it can be fun! New people, new surroundings, maybe even a new you! Be eager to help your coworkers if they need anything.
  • Show your enthusiasm to improve whatever you’re working on. Let people know that you are there to help them if they need it. Who will want to work with you if you’re always a grouch? If you have a negative, pessimistic energy about you as you start your job you will surely make a bad first impression. By demonstrating a positive energy and smiling at work you will be known as a very approachable person who everyone wants to work with. Smile when you pass people in the hallway, do not complain about assignments, and be sure that you do not take part in office gossip.

It may be more difficult for some people to be positive than it is for others, but optimism is something that will help the transition into a new position go much more smoothly.
